A magical evening calm reigns near Fowey (pronounced 'Foy'). The Fowey River and its surrounding countryside are the site for many of the Cornwall portions of the legendary Tristan and Isolde romance. After Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch's death and at the request of his daughter, Daphne DuMaurier completed Q's novel Castle Dor, about a modern Tristan and Isolde unable to resist their fate; it is set in this area. Daphne duMaurier lived across the river in Polruan for several years before moving to Menabilly (the setting for Rebecca and part of The House on the Strand). Her novel The Loving Spirit tells the story of one of her predecessors in the village, 19th century Janet Coombe, who so longed to sail ships the world over that her likeness was carved and her soul passed into a figurehead that guided her family for generations.
